Abuses of Advertising

Ideally,advertising should be aimed at making people aware of the goods available in the market.It is for the benefits of consumers by informing them of new products,sales and special offers. However,over the years,advertising has become a major industry that goes beyond informing to persuading and even brainwashing consumers.There is no doubt that advertising influences people to a large extent.Most of today's advertisements are filled with images that equates emotional well-being with material acquisition.if we look critically at most of the adverts on the television,we will discover how conniving the advertisers are.They decide for us what,when and how much to buy. Billboards,television and radio advertisements target us from a very early age forming our view of the world as we grow into adults.Advertisers are always on the lookout for a target audience to persuade them that their product or service is better than that of the competitor. Most of the people would like to think that they cannot influence by the advertisements.They act independently regardless of advertisements.This is exactly what the advertisers want us to think.However,what really happens is our actions are very much influenced by what we see in the advertisements. An obvious abuse of advertising is creating unnecessary wants and excess consumption.What results is that we have a craving for products that we are better of without or can do without.So we end up buying too much of things that are not good for us. As consumers,we have to be on our guard against unscrupulous advertising and advertisers.We do not want them to control what and how much we buy.
