Advertising, hurting society by lying
How does advertising influence people's behavior? These days it is easy to argue the benefits about media, and yet none can deny entirely that this may hurt society as well. By circulating information mixing half truth with half lying, media can nevertheless penetrate the people's mind with desires even for something worthless. In "The Empire of Images in Our World of Bodies", Susan Bordo states that advertising start hurting children when they are very young. However, the authors of "The Skinny on Celebrities: Parasocial Relationships Moderate the Effects of Thin Media Figures on Women's Body Image" claim that people who found parasocial similarity with the figures in media may encouraged by those models. I would say that advertising can really hurt our society, just like Jane Kilbourne says in "killing us softly 4", it may even change public definitions of beauty. Most people will receive more negative effects form media. Media, especially advertisements, affects people at a very young age even if they didn't feel it. In modern society, you can find advertisements everywhere, television, Internet, magazines, bus stop, etc. Children who did not have a complete personal outlook on life may already be affected by advertisements: usually, they are negative effect. In "The Empire of Images in Our World of Bodies", Susan Bordo indicates that "In the world in which our children are growing up,... The chronic dieters have been at it since they were 8 and 9 years old." Eating disordering is one of the most worst effect which is caused by media. Susan Bordo believes most teenage girls has an unhealthy eating habit due to media when she writes that " Theirs is a world in which groups of dorm girls will plow voraciously through pizzas, chewing and then spitting out each mouthful."
