Through studying the natural sciences in high school, my interest in science has deeply increased; recently I was under pressure to choose a course of study at the undergraduate level, but I knew I wanted to do something in the scientific field, particularly along the lines of biology and chemistry. While researching various courses, I came across genetics, which was of great interest to me, finding out that the course included aspects such as cell mutation, the studying of chromosomes, and the behavior of micro-organisms. These topics genuinely sparked my interest in the field. Hearing the words 'DNA' and 'genes' in the news is no longer foreign to our ears; genetics underpins much of the news we hear about scientific advances. I have always been interested in watching documentaries about inheritance and disease and learning about the interaction of genotypes and the environment and how somatic mutations can lead to the development of diseases. My main motive in studying genetics at an undergraduate level is the desire to be at the forefront of further medical developments, to make a difference in science, to invent, and to create. As a potential molecular geneticist, I am keen on contributing to the growing medical fields and giving my utmost to help our society overcome genetic disease. I have studied Biology, English Literature, Calculus, and Psychology at an Advanced Placement level and I feel that these choices have provided me with a wide and varied base upon which to begin my University education. I have found the molecular aspects of both Biology and Chemistry to be fascinating and have found this to be a strong foundation for my interest in Genetics. I have the expected strong scientific based skills of laboratory work and logical thought processes, skills enhanced through high level analysis and essay-writing within my English coursework. I believe that these skills will prove to be very helpful for studying University level Genetics. Genetics is a...
