Sales & Trading — what’s it all about?
Essentially our division is responsible for selling and trading in the financial markets. Our clients are organisations or bodies (or sometimes individuals) who have money to invest. They may be investment managers from large institutions, pension funds, large corporates or even royalty — we get to work with a huge variety. Our teams look after our clients by advising them on the best investment opportunities (e.g. in equity, currency or commodities) and then buying, selling and structuring their investments for them. Typical roles within our division:
Sales — We work directly with our clients to build and manage these critical relationships. Like any client-facing role, we get to know and understand what our clients need so we can consistently add value and solve their problems. Structuring — We use our creative minds to put together investment packages and products based on what our clients need. It’s then crucial that we’re able to communicate our ideas across the team and beyond. Trading — Working closely with the sales team, we invest and trade within the markets on behalf of our clients. Our best traders have a keen sense of risk and are highly numerate. Quantitative Analysis — Here, we need to know what risk we’re exposed to and what returns we’re likely to get. We do this by rigorous financial modelling and in-depth analysis of the investments we make. As you may imagine, being good with numbers is very important here too. Sales & Trading at Citi — is your place here?
Our team members need to be on the pulse of the market and recognise when longer-term trends are forming. It’s broader than just finance, every piece of news could have an impact on what we do — that’s why we ask for curious, creative and clever thinkers. Whether it’s a split-second trading decision or in-depth analysis of a complicated transaction, our goal remains the same: provide value to our clients’ investments.
In order for a company to grow as a business it often needs to raise money to finance an acquisition, product development or any one of a number of other potential investments. Essentially our division is responsible for raising this capital for our clients. We then bridge the gap between our banking clients (the "issuer" of the share, bond, etc.) and those looking to invest in our Public Markets organisation. Our typical clients include large corporates, public sector organisations and sovereign wealth funds. Our team is split into Equity Capital Markets, Debt Capital Markets, Loans, Leveraged Finance, Securitisation and the debt and equity derivatives businesses. We create, structure and execute new issues of capital and then provide our clients with a range of related services. Arguably the most important of these services is to manage their existing liabilities. We also help them with: Secondary trading assistance
Real-time market insight
